The Cyra Necklace is a powerful ode to Puerto Rico's sun, a resource central to the energy culture on the island. For the indigenous Taíno, the sun wasn't just seen; it was felt, honored, and woven into every part of life. It's long believed to emit, strength, health, and longevity to both people and the land.
The tightly woven chain is inspired by the ornate rejas — the iron bars that line windows in every barrio. While physically these bars keep houses safe from threats, they more deeply symbolize protection of cultural home within. The interlocked links represent the resistance Boricuas have demonstrated for centuries — an unwavering and active effort to defend the island's identity, culture, and spirit from colonization and erasure.
In combination, this necklace serves as a nod to an energy that has lived on this island for centuries, and refuses to be extinguished. Despite being only 100 x 35 miles in size, the people of Puerto Rico know how to feel the heat and keep the fire burning.
